WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – As Halloween creeps closer, college campuses are gearing up for a weekend of costumes, music, and late night fun. However, behind the flashing lights and themed parties, campus officers and student leaders are reminding everyone that the best way to enjoy the festivities is to stay smart and stay safe.

From haunted house gatherings to costume contests and packed apartment parties, Halloween weekend is one of the busiest times of the year for college students. It is really easy to get caught up in the excitement, but remembering a few safety basics can make the difference between a fun night and a dangerous one.
“If you are going to a party make sure you never go alone, have a designated driver, and if you do go alone make sure you have contact with someone and keep them posted,” said Ron Fox, WLU’s Chief of Police.
Students are also encouraged to keep an eye on their drinks and never accept an open drink from anybody. Trusting your instincts is key, and if something feels off, it probably is.
Halloween costumes can also pose risks if not planned carefully. Visibility, comfort, and safety should come before style. Avoid masks that limit sight, and if you are walking around campus at night, wear something reflective.
For many students, Halloween is a chance to relax and unwind during the semester, but safety should always come first. Whether you are at a crowded party or a small get together with friends, taking precautions can help ensure that the night stays fun and memorable for all the right reasons.
Before heading out, remember to double check your costume, charge your phone, and make a plan because the best treat this Halloween is getting home safe.
