WEST LIBERTY, WV– Hunter Patterson was destined to be a star in the sports world.
He grew up in a small town with a population of 2,000 people, but he still had big dreams. Patterson, being a dual sport athlete, said “my approach to track and football are similar, you still gotta show up and work every single day.” This is the mentality that helped him achiever the honor of being an All-American in track and an All-Conference player in the Mountain East Conference.
Patterson gives credit to his family for his competitive nature. Growing up, Patterson and his family competed in everything and nobody wanted to come in last place. It plays a big part in his character now, and we can see this as a factor for his success on the field and the track.
Hunter’s 2024 stats in football were nothing short of amazing. He rushed for 858 yards on 138 carries and nine touchdowns. He also had 36 catches for 417 yards and for touchdowns.

In one game against Fairmont State in 2024, he had 210 rushing yards! This season is yet to be over, and he has 762 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. It’s safe to say Hunter Patterson is the star of the Topper football team.
Despite having so much success, he’s not prideful. “He is a humble guy and plays as a team player with a chip on his shoulder,” said Levi Gullion, his teammate.
Another big time playmaker for the Topper football team is Patterson’s roommate, Isaac Tavo. Tavo said, “Patterson makes our job as offensive lineman way easier. He brings the dynamite to the offense.”
These two teammates are good friends with Patterson and only have positive words about his character, emphasizing his humbleness.
He is also an exceptional gamer. He enjoys playing NBA 2k in his free time with his buddies.
His motivation in sports derives from his desire to not take his remaining time for granted. “I’m not going to be able to do this forever, so I am going to give it my best right now while I still can,” said Patterson.
His tip for the next generation of athletes? “You just got to want it. Nobody else is going to do it for you. You have to be able to ignore whatever is happening around you and the people that may be distracting you. You have to go get it.”
