Hilltopper Track and Field sweeps Tim Weaver Invitational
It was a big day for West Liberty University Track and Field this past Saturday, April 2, as the hilltop hosted the second annual Tim Weaver Invitational at the West Family Athletic Complex. Looking to put on a good show for the hometown fans, the Hilltoppers delivered with impressive results throughout the day.
Senior Kelsi Hulit continued her dominant and impressive season, placing first in the women’s discus throw event with a distance of 45.47, more than seven meters further than her closest competitor. Hulit, Kennedy Martin, Megan Hawthorne and Lura Simons swept the top-four in the discus throw for West Liberty. Hulit also took victory in the hammer throw event with a distance of 40.9 meters and the shot put event with a distance of 11.73 meters. West Liberty swept the top-five in the shot put, with Hulit, Martin, Kaylee Savage, Jaeda Nowak and Megan Hawthorne finishing first through fifth, respectively.
The Hilltoppers scored another victory in the men’s 110 meter hurdles event, as Mikhi Anderson finished first by nearly four-tenths over second place. Anderson wasn’t done, however, and added another victory in the men’s high jump event with a score of 1.90 meters.
Danah Phillips and Tavian Richardson finished first and second for the Hilltoppers in the men’s 800 meter run event, with Phillips scoring the win. The two smoked the competition, beating third-place Julian Paul by just under a second. Phillips was able to beat Richardson to the line by just over one-tenth of a second.
The Hilltoppers swept the pole vault events, with Olivia Combs putting up a score of 3.05 meters to win the women’s event and Reese Burnside winning the men’s event with a score of 4.6 meters. Burnside and Nate Lucas swept the top-two in the men’s event.
In the men’s 1500 meter run, West Liberty’s Brenden Sands took the victory by nearly a second and a half over second place winner, Philip White. The 1500 meter run was West Liberty’s best event of the day, with the top-nine finishers featuring eight Hilltoppers, including White who ran unaffiliated.
West Liberty completed their big day with wins in overall scoring by both the men and women. The Hilltopper men took victory with 167.5 points over second place winner, Point Park, who finished with 162. The women took a more dominant victory, scoring an incredible 242 points, gapping second place West Virginia Wesleyan by 67.
The Hilltopper track and field season will resume Saturday, April 9 as the team will travel to New Wilmington, Pa. to compete in the Westminster Invitational. For more information about West Liberty track and field, visit hilltoppersports.com.
