WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.— This past Wednesday, in the Student Leadership Center, the Game Club’s Pokemon Stadium Event took place with an unexpected result.
Due to a mix up with the posters, not as many people showed up as originally expected. The flier design incorrectly displayed the event taking place on Wednesday the 26th instead of the 25th. The fact that Karaoke was also going on, just in the ballroom next door, might’ve also led to the small turn out.
Eight people came to the event, and of those eight, only four played for extended periods of time.
“It’s a bit of a shame,” said Alexis Cole, the Treasurer for the club. “But hey, no matter how many people show up, we’re still going to have a blast. It’s not a problem for us, we’ll still have fun no matter what.”
The atmosphere in the room was quiet, but full of jokes. Everyone who showed up admitted that despite the turn out, they had an amazing time.
The game of the day was Pokemon Stadium, a game where two players duke it out using their favorite Pokemon from the first two generations of games. Each player picks six Pokemon from the list before going into a Pokemon battle, where the teams face off.
There was no tournament set-up to the games; it was just a small gathering where anyone could face anyone if they wanted to. No one was keeping score.
One of the matches even went into overtime, lasting twenty five minutes: the longest match of the night, bar none. It was fought between the Liaison and the Secretary of the Game Club Matt Web and Alania Cole. Both had their teams of six: Typhlosion, Xatu, Gengar, Psyduck, Entei, and Cubone for Cole, and Azumarill, Blissey, Raichu, Dewgong, Kingler, and Lapras for Web.
“It was like watching two people try and chip away each other’s health one hit point at a time. It took way too long. I went to go get food in the middle, and they were still fighting,” said Alexis Cole.
In the end, Alania Cole was defeated, Web claiming his victory.
The Game Club’s next event, Rock Band, is set to take place two weeks from now, on Wednesday, October 9th. It will start at 7 p.m. in the Student Leadership Center.
