WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.— On Monday, October 21st, History Club had their first movie night of the year.
History Club has many different activities that they host at their meetings, including exhibits of historical replica items, lectures, viking clothing manufacturing, and movie nights.
The event name speaks for itself: during the club’s usual meeting time, they will get together in their room and watch a “historical” movie, though the word historical is used loosely. Anything movie can be brought up to watch that night, no matter when it was released or what it was about.
Everyone comes into the room, shuts off the lights, and relaxes as whatever movie they had chosen in the previous meeting is played on the TV screen in the basement of Main Hall in Room MB10.
The History Club sat down to watch a horror movie this time, which was Full Moon’s “Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge.” It was directed by David DeCoteau and stars Guy Rolfe in the titular role as Andre Toulon.
As the name suggests, this is the third movie in the Puppet Master Franchise, being a prequel and the backstory to one of the main characters of the series, Mr. Toulon. In the film, Andre Toulon, a Jewish puppeteer, is living in Berlin during World War 2 and goes on a mission to avenge his dead wife using his magical living puppets. The movie ends with Toulon killing the man who shot his wife to death and escaping on a train to Switzerland.
The reception of the film was generally positive within the club, with a lot of members who attended that night complimenting the stop motion work in the film, and of course, the kills.
One of the members of the club, Alexis Cole, even brought her replica props from the film so that everyone could look at them and even play with them a bit before the movie began. The prop replicas were five of the eight puppets shown throughout the franchise’s runtime, including one who did not show up in the movie shown.
This will not be the last movie night of the year. There are a few more movie nights planned that have not had their specific movies chosen yet.
