WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.— Spring Fling is a beloved campus tradition that has provided students with a break from academic pressures for many years. Typically held in the spring, it takes place between “dead week” and finals, offering a perfect chance to relax and celebrate the end of the academic year.
Since 2021, many students have missed the festive atmosphere. Recently, Activities Coordinator Kate Billings announced plans to revive the Spring Fling in May 2025.
In the past, Student Life’s focus has shifted to other celebrations like Greek Week, which is to celebrate Homecoming. However, Student Government Association officials are eager to bring back Spring Fling into campus culture. This year, they aim to ensure every student can have a joyful day on the quad during the dead week in the upcoming spring semester, revitalizing the tradition to create lasting memories and rekindle school spirit for all.
Student Life’s goal for this event is to hold it on-campus to prevent drinking and driving and for students to not travel a long distance to attend the event and avoid spending a lot of money. Previously, they came up with themes for Spring Week to match Greek Week. Some of the themes include superheroes, Nickelodeon, and many more.
Student Life does not have a well-founded theme for the 2025 Spring Fling yet, nor do they have the decorations they want to use. There are 4 to 5 different people from SGA planning the event, and they hope to get a lot of students to attend, more than in previous years.
The official date for the highly-anticipated Spring Fling event is set for May 3. This timing was chosen carefully due to concerns about how close it falls to graduation ceremonies later in May.
To ensure that the event can proceed smoothly, SGA has made thorough preparations regarding potential weather conditions. They made a detailed to-do list that includes setting up a spacious tent with walls to protect attendees from wind and rain, as well as arranging for heaters to keep everyone warm in case of freezing temperatures. If the weather proves to be not in favor, SGA has a backup plan to relocate the event to the ASRC (Athletic and Recreation Center). This alternative option will ensure that the event continues without interruption or conflict, providing a comfortable environment for students.
Also, the Student Government Association is focused on securing sponsorships for the Spring Fling event by partnering with the athletics and housing departments. These funds will cover food, beverages, entertainment, and safety measures, ensuring a fun and secure experience for attendees.
Billings firmly believes that this event will serve as an excellent opportunity for students to take a break from their harsh academic schedules. It offers a chance to unwind, escape the pressures of studying and finals, and reconnect with friends.
