WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.– DDR, also known by its full name, Dance Dance Revolution, made its appearance last Thursday, November 7th, 2024, at the West Liberty University Student Success Center. In an event organized by the Game Club, students got to test their skill at the famous arcade game.
The event took an hour, with a small break in the middle so that the club could upload a mod to their game. A lot of the music in the version of DDR they were using was Japanese Pop Music. Songs like “Bad Apple” by Jun’ya Ōta and “Frozen Ray (for EXTREME)” by dj TAKA were there, among others, along with some American songs sprinkled in like “Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz and “Baby” by Justin Bieber featuring Ludacris.
Some of the people participating wanted more variety in the song list, so they managed to convince the Game Club President Aaron York to download an additional mod to the game. The mod added twenty-nine songs from across the Mario game franchise. The ones most popular with the event being “Destruction Dance” from Wrecking Crew, “Blooper Bob” from Super Mario Bros, and “Starring Wario!” from Wario World.
The event started at 7 p.m. and had a small, but expected turnout. Most of the people who showed up were the members of the club itself, happy to spend their Thursday evening on the dance floor of the Student Success Center. The event was not played in a tournament style, so there was no “winner” chosen. The battles were decided, mostly randomly, with some small exceptions being made for people who really wanted to go against each other.
“I thought it was fun,” said Alexis Cole, Treasurer of the Game Club. “Even if I sucked at the game, it was nice to have something to do.”
Game Club will also be keeping the Dance Pads used to run the game for years to come. The pads will be in their club meeting room, MB10, and will be available to use for future events, as well as just regular club meeting days.
The next event for the club is, as of yet, undecided. However, they will be having their last meeting of the year in two weeks, before everyone gets ready for dead week.
