WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.— West Liberty University’s own choir made up of 31 Students, the West Liberty University Singers led by Dr. Douglas McCall and assistant director Rachel Price will be hosting a concert at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church on November 15th at 7:00 p.m. The concert features student singers, singers from the community choir, and an orchestra accompaniment made of musicians from the community and student/staff body.
Not only will the concert feature music from Robert Ray’s Gospel Mass, a vibrant and innovative work that unites the traditions of Catholic Mass with the expressive energy and emotions of African American gospel music, but the West Liberty University Singers will also be doing a world premiere of an original piece by Matthew A. Fossa, composer of Solomon’s “Songs for the Bride.”
Solomon’s “Songs for the Bride” will be performed for the first time in history, as it is an original piece commissioned for the West Liberty University Singers. The piece is performed acapella, and the text is sacred from the “Song of Solomon” as it originally intended as a song. The biblical text uses nature-filled imagery to celebrate romantic love as an allegory of the divine relationship between God and His people.
The choir concert is free to attend, however, the choir is taking donations for the Vance WLU Foundation Fund. The Vance WLU Foundation Fund provides support for the personnel and equipment needed, as well as the funds to commission Fossa to compose Solomon’s “Songs for the Bride.” Feel free to come and support the choir at their concert tonight.
