WEST LIBERTY, W.Va — West Liberty University’s (WLU) Pride Club hosted its fourth annual Drag Bingo event last Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Student Union. The event, which has grown into a campus tradition, brought together students and faculty to celebrate drag culture and promote LGBTQ+ visibility.
The Pride Club, known for fostering inclusivity, continues to build a safe and welcoming campus environment through events like Drag Bingo. Co-president Olivia Gorby highlighted the event’s role in bringing the WLU community together.
“When my co-president and I took over the club last year, our goal was to create community,” Gorby said. “I think the Drag Bingo event is good for that because so many people come. You see that so many people are on your side that you may not have realized.”
Returning drag performers Dixie Surewood and Chi Chi DeVire delighted attendees with vibrant performances while hosting the event. Surewood, who has served as host since Drag Bingo’s debut in 2020, highlighted the event’s growing appeal.
“It’s always nice to see people come back and see new faces, too, to get an experience of what drag is,” Surewood said. “Every year, it gets busier and busier. I think it’s gained popularity, and it’s something we look forward to.”
DeVire echoed Surewood’s sentiments, encouraging attendees to embrace the fun and energy of the event. Both queens expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic and supportive audience.
Students also shared their perspectives on the event’s impact. Senior Viola Angle, a four-time attendee, reflected on her personal connection to Drag Bingo.
“Year one, I was really nervous,” Angle said. “It was new to me, but I love bingo. After the first year, I was like, ‘I’m coming back every year,’ and I have. I’ll come back every year.”
For first-time attendee Herb Ross, the event surpassed his expectations.
“I’m most excited for all of it,” Ross said. “I feel enlightened, and the energy is immaculate.”
The event was made possible with support from WLU’s Deans, Clay Club, Student Government Association, Student Life, and the Student Success Center. As a longstanding tradition, Drag Bingo continues to foster a sense of unity and celebrates diversity within the campus community.
