WHEELING– Nestled deep in the rolling hills of West Virginia, West Liberty University’s Photography Club enjoys capturing the beauty that surrounds them. Most recently, the club took advantage of the fall scenery by hosting a Photo Walk event for club members at the nearby Oglebay Resort.

The WLU Photography Club is student-run, with Morgan Howard acting as President and Faculty Advisor Jared Thompson overlooking operations. This club was established in Fall 2024 after failing in previous years.
“This club was created to provide a place for students to practice their creativity and network with others who also share the same interests outside of an academic setting,” said Thompson.
Howard explains that the biggest challenge this club faces is getting people involved, as it still is a growing club. “We have around 70 members registered, but only 10 to 15 active members,” she says.
The Photography Club holds events such as photo walks, monthly photo contests, and photography workshops for students with the help of Thompson. You do not need to take photos with a camera to join this club, but the club has a select number of cameras that they are willing to lend to students to use.
The themed monthly photography contests open at the first of every month and last until the end of the month. September’s theme is Golden Hour. If you are interested in submitting a photo for a chance to win a gift card, you can scan the QR Code on the flyers around campus.
The Photography Club is also looking for students interested in filling the Vice President and Social Media Coordinator roles alongside Howard as President. If you or someone you know is interested in running for these positions, you can email [email protected] by Wednesday, Sept. 24.
If you are interested in joining the club, you can email the club and check out their Instagram page for more updates. Meetings are held every first and third Friday of the month at noon, with the next meeting taking place October 3 in the Photo Lab in the basement of the library.
