WEST LIBERTY– Some people transfer from one school to another during their college career. This is not always the easiest thing to do as you will have to get to know new people and potentially make new friends. Some times it takes some people a little longer to adjust and open up when they join a new school.
I am a transfer student at West Liberty University. I am majoring in Broadcasting and is my first semester at West Liberty. I transferred from University of Phoenix online.
I was very shy when I came to West Liberty because I did not know anyone. As a couple weeks of the semester went by, I made two new friends, and I am talking a lot more.
After talking to a few other transfer students that go to West Liberty, I realized that everyone adjusts to being a transfer student differently.
Kaden Bednarek is a Media Communications student who transferred from Ohio University Eastern and Ohio University Online. She said was very confident in being a transfer because she knew she was going to learn stuff, but she still came in alone. “I did not know anyone when I transferred to West Liberty,” she said.
Another student, Marisa Cook, transferred from West Virginia Northern Community College and is majoring in Psychology and minoring in Addiction Studies. She said she was nervous and scared because it is a bigger school and she did not know where anything was on campus, but she at least knew a couple workers in the Student Union. Scott Heath, a Broadcasting major who transferred from West Virginia Community College, also said he was little nervous because of the larger campus compared to his former school and he had not made friends yet.
While some students may struggle with the transition, others may find it more rewarding. Grace Hoagland, a Media Communications student who transferred to West Liberty University from Marshall University, said going from one school to another was an easy adjustment for her because she is from around this area, which made her feel confident. She was already friends with a few people that go to West Liberty because she went to high school with them.
If you are a transfer student who is experiencing stress and feelings of loneliness, you can request an appointment with Counseling Services through your student WINS account or by emailing Lisa Witzberger at [email protected].
