WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.— West Liberty Intramurals wrapped up its yearly flag football league on Monday.
Although there were only three teams that came out for the league (The Average Joes, Mike Joneses, and The Burgers), the teams were a mix of friends and athletes from various sports teams. The Mike Joneses teams included members of the WLU Golf and Baseball teams, and The Burgers had members of the WLU Football team. The Average Joes were a mix of students from West Liberty, mostly including commuters and non-athletes. Overall about 40 people came out for the league between all the teams.
The team that walked away with the championship was the Average Joes. The team captain, Jacob Walker, says that the rivalry between the Average Joes and Mike Joneses has been going on for the last 4 years.

The Average Joes squeezed out a win in the championship game 37-33 against the Mike Joneses. The Average Joes league record was 3-2 compared to the Mike Joneses, who were 3-1 for the season. The only loss Mike Joneses took was their finals game. All time, the Mike Joneses have the most championship wins over The Average Joes for the last 4 years.
Runner-ups Team Captain Carter Stewart said that they love the friendly competition with the rivalry between the two teams. He said this league is a great opportunity for the Golf team in their off season for the guys to come together and have some fun.
Haden Derrow, the Intramurals Graduate Assistant, was encouraged by the league, but he is looking forward to improving the league even more for next year. Derrow said that players told him that it was “the smoothest its been ran since they’ve been here.” Many of the regular players of the league are in their third or fourth year here at West Liberty.
The main challenge with the league for Derrow was communication. He said at times, there were some lapses in communication with the players and athletics and that is something he is looking to improve for next year’s league.
Derrow also wants to implement some new rules for the next league. The most prominent one, because it came up in the championship, was allowing safeties in the games.
Derrow would like more teams to come out for the event next and to bring more attention to the league in general. He mentioned that next year maybe they could give out free popcorn to garner more attention.
