Summer is right around the corner, and what better way is there to escape the heat than to immerse yourself in a new movie or two? After watching some previews, listening around, and comparing ratings, here are some of the films that have the potential to become great summer blockbusters.
“Money Monster” (May 13): George Clooney, Julia Roberts, and Jack O’Connell star in this Jodie Foster-directed thriller about a failed investor taking over a financial TV show in an explosive standoff. The host and the producer frantically try to explain the mystery behind a conspiracy of today’s global markets before time runs out as the standoff is broadcast on live TV.
“Alice Through the Looking Glass” (May 27): Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter return with the rest of the gang from Wonderland in this whimsical sequel to the 2010 film. This time, Alice must return to Wonderland and battle Time to save the Mad Hatter. If you liked the first one, this one looks just a magical. Plus, you’ll get to hear Alan Rickman’s voice again.
“X-Men: Apocalypse” (May 27): The star-studded X-Men are back again as they join forces to try and stop the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse, and his four followers in their plan for human extinction. The X-Men recruit some young faces as they go to war in this sure-to-be epic battle.
“The Conjuring 2” (June 10): Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren to help another family being tortured by evil spirits in London, England. Based on a true case, this horror sequel is likely to be great if it is anything like the first one.
“Finding Dory” (June 17): You knew this was coming. We’ve all been waiting for a sequel about our favorite Disney-Pixar fish since 2003. Now, it’s finally here, and the odds are that this flick won’t disappoint. You’ll see some familiar faces as you dive into another journey, though this time Dory is searching for her parents.
“Ghostbusters” (July 15): A new, all-female team of Ghostbusters takes on the strange paranormal activity in New York in this reimagining. When they put Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones in the same room, you knew we were in for a real comedic treat. “Who you gonna call?” The box office.
“The Founder” (August 5): A backstory is always interesting, especially if it involves hamburgers. In this biopic, Michael Keaton stars as Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s. The movie follows Kroc on his quest of revolutionizing the world of food forever as the former milkshake machine salesman turns into a global franchiser.
“Nine Lives” (August 5) A successful businessman (Kevin Spacey) gets a wake-up call when he misses out on his daughter’s birthday party, yet again, and becomes trapped inside of her new cat. He has one week to make things right and reconnect with his family, or else he is stuck in feline form forever.
“Suicide Squad” (August 5): Here’s another one we’ve been waiting for. A government agency (led by Viola Davis) secretly recruits Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith) and other captured super-villains to take down secret black ops missions. Jared Leto also stars as the Joker, and the superhero nerds in us all can’t wait.
“Sausage Party” (August 12) For those who want a more adult-friendly cartoon, this R-rated Seth Rogen film is the perfect choice. As different foods await being purchased by humans, they soon discover the secrets of life outside of the supermarket and go on a quest save their race.
