On a beautiful Thursday night at West Liberty University, the Hilltoppers took on the 1-1 Charleston Golden Eagles. After a night full of missed field goals, West Liberty came away with the 9-6 victory and advanced to an overall 2-1 record.
West Liberty got the scoring going late in the first quarter when quarterback Brenton Colabella connected with Marcus Malara over the middle on a 14-yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt, however, was missed by kicker Christian Morris to put the Hilltoppers up 6-0.
The Hilltoppers tacked on three more points when Morris split the uprights to go up 9-0. With seconds remaining on the first half clock, the Golden Eagles got a 31-yard field goal of their own to make it a 9-3 game going into halftime.
The second half was very back and forth with minimal scoring, as the only points came by way of the 33-yard field goal off of the foot of Golden Eagles kicker, Dylan Miles.
With five and a half seconds remaining in the game, and the Hilltoppers leading 9-6, the Golden Eagles had a chance to tie up the game from 30 yards out but the kicker, Miles, missed wide right for the second time of the game and the Hilltoppers went crazy as time expired.
The next game for the Hilltoppers will be next Saturday as they travel to UVa-Wise to take on the Cavaliers at 1:30 p.m. Be sure to check out next week’s issue of the Trumpet for a game preview and player profiles.
