West Liberty University’s women’s tennis have kicked off their season strong. The team had previously won 8-1 and 9-0 against Grove City College and Shepherds University respectively, and swept their third consecutive match after defeating Notre Dame College this past Saturday at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
The Lady Toppers took control of the three doubles with Laura Huwe and Thais Mendez at number one doubles, Ana Berbel and Alaina Pauley at number two and Kate Pinchuk and Makayla Schaefer at number three. They then went on to win five of the six singles, bringing the victory home. Claiming singles were Mendez, Berbel, Pinchuk, Pauley and Lisa Natchwey.
The team also impressed during the ITA regional championships in which senior Pinchuk won the B draw of the tournament and got to the final of the doubles back draw, with freshman Makayla Schaefer as her doubles partner.
“I really enjoyed playing in the ITA’s this year. I was required to do my best in every match in order to win,” said Pinchuk. “I believe our team this season has a good chance of winning conference. We have very consistent seniors and outstanding new girls. I am very excited for all of our practices and matches. I’m sure we will do great.”
Schaefer also sees good results in the future, “I think the team is going to keep doing well this season. We have a very solid line up one through ten and I can’t wait to see how the season progresses.”
The Lady Toppers are now getting ready to play all their conference matches, including West Virginia Wesleyan and The University of Virginia’s College at Wise this month. Coach Heather Gallagher hopes to bring the wins home.
