Middle blocker Sydney Scherer is playing her last season here on the hilltop. Scherer earned 2016 First-Team All-MEC middle blocker and 2014 MEC All-Freshman Team. As of Oct. 4, she is third in the NCAA Division II in Active Career blocks with 455. Her goal for her last season on the hilltop is to win conference.
Scherer said, “I started playing volleyball in eighth grade, and kind of knew I wanted to extend playing into college around freshman year of high school when I started playing year-round with my club team.”
She chose West Liberty University for a variety of reasons. She said, “I loved the size of the school and campus, I loved the class sizes and how the faculty knows who you are and you aren’t just a number compared to some bigger schools. I loved the athletic program and the coaches right off the bat and once I met with nursing faculty and toured Campbell I knew that this was the school I wanted to attend.”
After graduation, she plans to take the NCLEX exam (National Council Licensure Examination) and become a labor and delivery nurse. “I would love to start working for a year to apply what I am learning now and get some experience and then go back to school to become a nurse practitioner,” Scherer said.
Scherer also had some advice she would give a freshman player. “I would say that being a student athlete is definitely hard work and there may be days where you get overwhelmed but to take it one day at a time. Put in extra work, challenge yourself, and take studies very seriously because that is what you will have when you graduate,” Scherer said. “I would also say that the memories and friends you make with your teammates are unforgettable and not to take your time as a student athlete for granted!”
The volleyball team will play away tonight, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats.

I have had the pleasure of watching Sydney Scherer grow up since she was in grade school and after reading the article, I can say that, “yes, she truly is as sweet, wonderful, intelligent and an incredible person as the article makes her out to be. I am honored to say that I know her”
