West Liberty University offers various tutoring services through the student help services in Main Hall. However, WLU is now offering students additional services in the new Writing Center.
The Writing Center offers assistance for any writing assignment that undergraduate or graduate students may be struggling with. This means the services are not limited to just English or writing assignments. Any student who has any difficulty with writing an assignment, from any type of course, can benefit from the Writing Center for free.
Director of the Writing Center and assistant professor of composition, Dr. Amanda Tennant explained, “The writing center offers free 30-minute appointments with trained writing tutors. Students can make appointments to work with a tutor on any writing assignments for a West Liberty course.”
The WLU Writing Center is located in Room L14, which is on the bottom floor of the Elbin Library.
Any student that wishes to make an appointment can easily do so by going online and visiting their website, and registering for an account with a West Liberty email address.
After making an appointment, students can choose to upload a draft of their assignments or any comments they have prior to the appointment, so that tutors know what the students wish to work on.
In addition to assistance with course assignments, the writing center can also help students with professional documents they may be struggling with.
“Tutors can also help with documents such as resumes, cover letters, and personal statements,” said Tennant.
The center only recently opened on Oct. 9, but students have already begun to benefit from the new services.
Tennant said, “Some examples of assignments students have brought to the center so far are comparison and contrast papers and process analysis essays for English 101, psychology research papers, and reflective essays.”
The writing center is open Monday through Friday. Appointments are offered at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays, and 9:30 a.m. on Fridays.
Students can enter the writing center during these times, but it would be more beneficial to set up an appointment. “Students are welcome to walk into the center, but we strongly recommend that they make an appointment to ensure that a tutor is available,” Tennant said.
