The West Liberty men’s golf team has had a productive fall season heading into the MEC Championship.
Under the direction of head coach Mike Ricci, the Hilltoppers have competed in four tournaments this fall, finishing in first, third, seventh, and tenth place. With one week to go heading into the MEC Championship held at Glade Springs Resort on Oct. 8-10, the Hilltoppers look to find more success.
Ricci’s Hilltoppers know what it’s like to play at Glade Springs Resort, as they did this season in the first tournament finishing in tenth place out of 23 competing teams. “It is a tough course that we know well and will prepare for,” said Ricci.
While the team finished tenth in the first tournament, it has only gotten better since.
The Hilltoppers competed in the Hal Hansen Invitational in Dubois, Pa., placing seventh out of the 11 teams.
The team next moved on to the Wally Edgell Invitational at Canaan Valley Resort, where they posted a third place finish.
Most recently, the team finished first at the Williams Country Club Invitational, hosted by West Liberty. They beat Charleston, Fairmont State, Davis & Elkins and Wheeling Jesuit.
All members of the team have seen playing time up to this point. Junior Sean Trapp has led the Hilltoppers all season, posting a top 20 finish in every event.
Senior Ike Judy has also found success this season as he has helped the team in every event thus far.
Finishing up the lineup has been junior Freddie Fitzsimmons, sophomores Peyton Moore, Caleb Moore, and Austin Lis and freshmen Howie Peterson and Alex Easthom. “We all need to play our best and contribute to help our team win,” said Ricci.
The Hilltoppers officially wrap up the season on Oct. 13-15 in Greensburg, Pa. at the Vulcan Invitational, hosted by California University of Pennsylvania.
