The West Liberty Hill toppers Men’s wrestling team is looking to build off of their success at the West Virginia Collegiate Invitational. West Liberty will then travel to take on Urbana this weekend in a Mountain East Conference match-up. The match against Urbana University will be this Friday starting at 6 p.m.
At the invitational at Wheeling Jesuit University the hill toppers rolled out a depleted men’s team that was missing a few starters, but their depth showed as they were able to roll past the competition with a combined score of 110.5 points and the next highest score being 70.5 points by Wheeling Jesuit University.
In the Wheeling Invitational Cory Secrist won the 125-pound division by way of a 4-2 defeat of Wheeling Jesuit Universities’ Frankie Bonura. Steven Slack won the 133-pound division with a 10-8 “sudden victory” over Alderson Broaddus’ Curtis Cox. Josh Cornell was on top of the 157-pound division with a 3-2 victory over Alderson Broaddus’ Tyler Bauer. Isaiah Meyers took home the hardware for the 184-pound division with a win over West Liberty’s own Chris Cook by a score of 5-2. Francesco Borsellino was the final Topper to take first place with a pin of West Liberty’s Ronnie D’Amico.
The match against Urbana will be a good test to see where our Hilltoppers are this year because Urbana is currently 3-8 and coming off of a crushing 45-0 loss against Ashland. This inter-conference match will take place in Urbana, Ohio starting at 6 p.m. Be sure to grab next weeks issue of the Trumpet for more game previews and player profiles.
