Today is a day we celebrate to thank all the servicemen and women who fought for this country. Thank you to every branch. Thank you to every soldier. Thank you, veterans, for keeping this country safe.
Veterans Day was originally Armistice Day, dedicated on Nov. 11, 1919, a year after the end of World War I. In 1954, President Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day, in order to recognize all veterans, not just ones from World War I. Since then, some years there are no school on the day and several businesses are closed to honor the day.
However, while one may wish their bank was open to cash a check or for any other little inconvenience, remember the true reason for today. Take some time today, and every chance you can, to thank a veteran.
“As far as what students can do for our veterans, they should always show courtesy and acknowledge the sacrifice these men and women have made,” said Maggie Burkhart, WLU’s veteran student representative. “They can do this by thanking them for their service. Especially older veterans, sometimes that’s the only interaction they have all week and it’s nice to feel appreciated.”
Make a note to say “thank you” today and do it more than just on this holiday.
If you or someone you know is a Veteran, there are some deals out there today just for you. Check out this USA Today article, where some of the listed restaurants serving up some free food include Bob Evans, Applebee’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. However, some of the deals do require proof of ID.
Thank you to all who have served and are serving. The Trumpet acknowledges your courage and strength, and we can’t thank you enough.
