Fifty Shades of Grey set a new record in the box offices with over $81.7 million in its opening weekend, being the move buff that I am, I got curious and had to see what all the hype was about.
Just to clarify, I had never read the book and after seeing the movie I might read the book. I went into this theater only knowing the gossip that is spoken about it. For me, it did not live up to the hype. The storyline was a typical romance but rather than focusing on the two falling in love it was trying to show the two falling in love and having sex (at least that’s what I think the goal was).
We’ll start with the sex aspect. First it was rather depressing that we rarely saw any of Mr. Christian Grey, Jamie Dornan. He was in ABC’s Once Upon A Time during the first season and I thought he was absolutely delicious, so seeing that he was in the movie just made it seem like if it was bad, hey at least I got see him partially naked. Except that rarely happened, they barely showed anything for a movie that’s book is popular because of its revealing sex. However, this could just be me, I have seen my share of HBO shows, 10 minutes of True Blood has the same amount of action that this movie had.
The acting was not bad, I feel like Dakota Johnson really got the character of Anastasia. She had her awkward comedic moments. Same with Dornan, he played the character well by being intimidating and a sweetheart all at the same time. The acting was probably the best part of the movie, it was what kept me wanting to watch.
Being that I have never read the book, I knew very little about the storyline. I went into the theater expecting to see a lot of sex. Instead, I was surprised that it took over half the film to get to that point. In the beginning the story was rather good. He had his secrets, she had no idea what was going on between them which is typically how my love life goes. It was relatable to me until things picked up and you were like “oh wow” and you realized that people actually do that.
Overall, the movie was interesting; the best part was the acting and the showcase that it does have a storyline that is relatable if you take away the dominatrix. I might read the books just to see if it is worst, I hear that it is. Personally, seeing it once was enough, maybe if I read the book I’ll like it more and might consider watching it again.
