As students begin to welcome in a new semester here at West Liberty University (WLU), The Trumpet is underway with a brand new look. This semester has started with some major changes within the paper.
My name is Marissa Lammie, a current junior here at WLU. For starters, I have become the new Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for this academic year. I plan to take on and lead the paper as we go further into the semester. I am a student with a double major in music education and music performance. But I have always loved journalism ever since I became EIC in high school.
I started as EIC here in Spring of 2023 but have been more active this semester and wanted to ensure that this paper becomes the best that it can be. I want us to be as we say “The Voice of the Hilltop”. This can ensure that the students’ voices are heard as their thoughts are extremely important.
Along with myself, we have welcomed a new managing editor Lilli Back. She has been serving as my right hand person and helping me edit articles. We have also welcomed back Haley Blakemore who is our new social media editor and photo editor.
With the start of the new year, we have also gained a new advisor for the paper. Cecilia Salomone is the advisor and really helped me and the rest of the staff with rebuilding this paper. Her passion and willingness to help us this semester is something I am extremely grateful for. I look forward to continuing to work alongside her.
To continue to rebuild the paper, we have teamed up with the Communications News Writing and Reporting class to get more stories and diversity to our paper. With this, we have the students writing articles and helping on staff so that they are getting experience writing for a paper. I hope that by having students help with this paper that we are able to have a bigger outreach to the community.
As we continue forward with this semester, I want to ensure we are doing justice for the students and allow their voices to be heard. All in all, I am beyond thrilled to serve as the EIC this year and help bring news to the campus.
