WEST LIBERTY, W. Va.– As the semester comes to an end, students are making summer plans. This often includes spending time outdoors in the heat.

According to the California Department of Public Health, people exposed to heat should drink plenty of juice or water. Caffeine and alcohol should be avoided in the heat. The American Red Cross recommends drinkingaround three-fourths of a gallon of water per day, but this varies per person.
The CDPH also recommends staying in air-conditioned buildings to avoid heat illness. If your home lacks air conditioning, it is recommended to spend time in an air-conditioned building or to take a cool shower or bath.
According to the National Library of Medicine, children and the elderly are at the highest risk of heat illness. In addition, some medicines and diseases can cause the body to not cool itself properly.
If you think someone is experiencing a heat-related illness, it is important to act fast. Get the person to a cool location and remain with them until they cool off. If necessary, call 911 and act as they advise.
It is important to stay safe as the heat rises. Have fun and stay safe this summer.
